What is Many Mothers?
Many Mothers volunteer home visitors offer practical support to proactive women with newborns through six-month-olds. All services are free. Your visitor can rock the baby while mom showers, play with older children while you tend the baby, help with light housework, help with errands, and connect you with community resources. Volunteers provide tailored support to meet families’ needs. This program is not based on financial need — every family deserves nurturing during this special time — it’s as simple as that. Call FSN for more information.
What can Many Mothers volunteers do for mothers of infants?
• Rock the baby while mom showers
• Read to or play with an older child while mom tends the baby
• Help with light housework
• Run errands with, or for the mother
• Connect moms with community resources
Volunteers are not babysitters or maids, but responsive maternal support people. They will creatively work with mothers to provide tailored support to meet each family’s needs.
Who are the volunteers?
A Many Mothers volunteer is a woman who has been carefully screened and trained. She understands the nature and scope of her role and desires only to assist the family in reaching their own goals. She is a nonjudgmental friend and support person.
How does the program work?
The program coordinator will get to know each mother and understand how best a volunteer can support her. Then she will match her to a volunteer who can meet her needs and be a friend. Moms should feel completely comfortable with their volunteers. Making quality matches is at the center of the program’s success.
Volunteers make visits to the family’s home for three months. Volunteers visit families twice a week for the first month. Visits last between one and two hours. In the second and third months, families receive one visit a week.
Volunteering
A volunteer can be any women who can provide loving friendship and nonjudgmental support to mothers with infants. Many Mothers volunteers receive training and support and are carefully matched to women who would benefit from a relationship with them. Contact Sarah Chandler if you are interested in volunteering.
